XC12 power usage?

Added by foft over 7 years ago

Does anyone have an XC12? I want to know if we give it enough power for the motor. Might be worth checking if the transistor gets hot!

yes i have one and can check how it load tapes

where are the transistors located?

Its TR2 near interface 2

tested the XC12 for an hour TR2 is not hot

Woohoo:)

but i do get strange phenomena..

occasionally the EclairXL does a soft reset when i press START or STOP.. it happen after the tape his hooked and working for a while..
currently its random but it happened with two XC12 tapes i got.

it even happened once when i removed the XC12 from the SIO port while the Eclair was powered on

Perhaps we need a big capacitor here Panos? Could try with a larger PSU.

i have been testing the XC12 and managed to get it stable when using a 2A external PS (my mobile LG phone charger),
the XC12 can load tapes fine, with long/short IRG records etc..

OK great. Thanks for testing it. Sounds like its spikes on connect/disconnect and button presses rather than continuous current that are the problem. So perhaps we can make it more stable by a big capacitor by the SIO 5V supply.

I mean with a smaller PSU

If you have an ammeter it would be very interesting to know the current on the 5V line and the motor control line. I understand this is annoying to wire up though...

i will need to make a breakout cable, need to find a spare SIO cale

The transistor has been carefully selected as to can handle till 1 Amper load. So there is no change to be hot.

I have talked about it many times in the past, and we must to make a decision! EclaireXL must be fed from a external PSU and not from a USB port which can supply 0.5 Amper maximum.
A PSU @ 1 or better 2 Amper, can cover all the current needs! ;-)

But many/most current USB power adapters provide much more than 0.5A. Most smartphone adapters are currently 2.0A.

On a related note Ijor, did you see the issue about the voltage level of 5V USB supplies. I checked a few and they are not great, which causes touch tablet level issues. http://www.64kib.com/redmine/issues/47

No, I wasn't aware about such an issue. Clicking on that link asks me for user and password???

So I guess smartphones don't care too much because they don't use the 5V directly, they just charge the battery. And even if not, probably everything works at lower voltage. But shouldn't be the same with tablets?

I also guess we don't care too much internally. For joysticks shouldn't matter too much either, probably not even for ROM cartridges? Unless, of course, the 5V voltage level is really too bad.
